Moving Forward With Development

In response to the confidence instilled in the city as a result of the DCB’s aggressive marketing strategies and the attractive development incentives offered, local and international investors have taken advantage of the conducive investment environment and set up shop in and around the city. The year 1999 saw the continuation, the completion, or the start of new development projects.

LETS TAKE A LOOK…

Bulawayo, the hub of development.

The Galen House Medical facility underwent a Z$ 80 million upgrade to a 100 bed clinic.

Construction of the Z$ 400 million Zonki`zizwe shopping centre, hotel and office complex began towards the end of 1999. The complex will comprise a mix of shops, studios, consulting rooms and offices, while the hotel will boast of conference facilities, functions rooms, dining area, and 100 bedrooms.

Bulawayo’s Catholic-run Mater Dei Hospital received a breast imaging and screening machine worth Z$ 4 million from the Oak Foundation of Zimbabwe. This is only the second machine of its kind in Africa and will aid many women in the timeous detection of breast cancer. At the same time the hospital underwent an infrastructure upgrade of over Z$ 40 million, including the addition of a Trauma Centre.

Plans to develop a Retirement Village & Frail Care Centre began. The Village will cater for over 400 people and provide employment for another 200 people.

The Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (P.T.C.), in conjunction with Telecommunication Consultancy India Limited (T.C.I.L.) began the digitalisation of all P.T.C. networks in the city at a cost of almost Z$ 3 billion. Over 2000 jobs will be created on completion and telephone lines will increase from 46 270 to 125 700.

South-African based supermarket chain, Shoprite / Checkers chose Bulawayo as the city to start its operations in Zimbabwe. This development, valued at more than Z$ 70 million, will comprise a supermarket and line shops and facilities for hawkers.

The National University of Science & Technology (NUST) moved onto its state-of- the-art campus. Total investment at the campus to date exceeds Z$ 400 million and is set to further exceed the Z$ 1 billion mark by the year 2001, and Z$ 2 billion by 2004.

In September 1999, President Robert Mugabe commissioned the Z$ 2,8 billion Bulawayo-Beitbridge Railway (BBR). The 350 km line is expected to bring immense economic benefits through enhanced national economic growth and the fostering of regional integration and trade.

Housing developments continued to take place throughout the City, with the most recent being Cowdray Park high density Suburb, Mahatshula medium density suburb, and Selborne Park low density suburb.

Companies in the City’s industrial areas have invested varying amounts in their plants through the purchase of new machinery or face-lifts to their premises. These include BMA Fasteners, Datlabs, Treger Group, Arenel Biscuits, Turnall, Sullivans, United Bottlers, Udine Products, Davis Granite, United Refineries, Clay Products, among others.
